Final adjustments

I was ready to be done, but then I looked back in it and found out that my design went out of the crop lines, so everything had to be shrunk down. So that it would fit within the lines, this lead to it looking a bit off balance but still like the initial idea.

Crit monday

My thoughts:

The typeface is based on a modern serif, but could probably do something more with it. 

My book cover does not really appeal to a contemporary readership as it looks a bit dated, even if it relates.

The design would not fit in with other non-fiction because most of them are mostly reliant on typography as this is based around an illustration. That way it might stand out a bit more. 

the spine needs to be focused around the hand. 

The shadow needs to be more precise 

Feedback:

- could the spine design be more considered?

-consider making the capital letter on the red on the spine in order to make it relate to the card idea

-why is his hand out? (explain it in rationale)

-try and use some smoothing tools in photoshop to smooth out the hand

-the spacing between "and how they get away with it" and the border need bigger spacing

- add texture to the typeface to make it look real

- the back cover copy is too close to the coin

The spacing ones I completely understand and have done that.

The colored uppercase letters on the spine do not relate to both the front and back, it just relates to the front cover. 

I need to add an explanation of the spine and mirrored typesetting in the rationale. 

In order to keep the slight hand made feel and the fact that it is made from a physical card I will not make it and more edited.

in order to relate the front and back a bit more, I tried to cut out the heart on the ace, the ace is moved upwards so that the king reaches for a love that is not there. This design is starting to look more like a fiction book this way, as it seems to have more of a romance theme in it, which this book does not have. 

In order to bring back the themes of the book, I have changed the ace to spades instead as it makes more sense that the money grabbing analogy is based on the meaning of the ace of spades as that car represents Power. The hierarchy of the back cover has been refined a bit in order to let the reader easily know who said what as the quotes does not explain so much about the book, it is more about the credibility of the reviewers and their take on the book.  
In order to not let the "the phenomenal bestseller" line overpower the author name, I have placed it on the bottom instead.  In order to intergrade the line, I have tried to line it up with the shoulder of the king. But it seems a bit off.

this design is based on the mirrored design that cards have. In that, the back cover text is upside down and lines up with the bottom "A" as it does on the top. the writing goes in circles and the king goes against the writing to showcase that the establishment does not necessarily care about what the public want. The spine is, therefore, following the same rule, so Owen Jones is not following the traditional rules of the spine. 

Development physical card design

The previous edition had too big typography so in this rendition the Owen Jones typography and author of chavs have been made slightly smaller in order to create more space within the design. The design already has a lot of elements within it. 

After the crit, I was told that I should try to use a pound coin in the design as to showcase that the establishment is reaching for money in reference to the tax evasion that the UK business manage to get away with in order to keep more money. 

This was an attempt to make the design in grayscale in order to showcase the text, but everything turns in to the same tone of color so there is no need to do that as everything turns out looking gray. 

Taking inspiration from the illustration I have made I tried to erase the faces of the king in order to showcase the faceless factor that the Establishment has to the public.  This design has the king reaching for the money as to hammer it in that the Establishment is greedy. 

The line "the phenomenon bestseller does not work in the design in order to establish symmetry or a mirrored effect within the design so in a horrible attempt I tried to fit it within where the hand is supposed to be. the coin is now back centered within the card so that the back cover copy is not looking too gimmicky with it looking like a tie. 

This design is focused on finding the right placement for the front cover copy. The author of chavs is now placed within the fur lining in a curved shape. The line with "The Phenomenal bestseller looks very awkward.

In order to see other abilities within the design, I made an attempt to illustrate the card. In the process of it, all the idea of the establishment represented by the king of hearts was faceless as the establishment is viewed. 

After the crit, I got some feedback that I could use money instead of the heart so that the king reaches from money as the establishment is represented as eager to earn money and keep it for themselves. 

the typography within this design is placed within the illustration itself. The card is a bit cleaner but the words get a bit lost. 

This design uses red with the letters to insinuate the card. The other typography is placed around the coat collar as to incorporate the cover copy in the illustration without it being forced.

The former one was a bit flat so using the texture from some well-used cards as to give a bit more life back to the design. 

In order to have the king actually reaching for the money the coin is moved up slightly, this creates a bit of imbalance in the ace card on the back.

I got some feedback from my peers that said that I should make the face to the king, but the king ended up looking a bit creepy with the face. 

Just the design without the typography

Laws against rape

In Norway, rape is not considered rape even if the girl protests. It has to involve threats or violence. 

Rune Bård Hansen means that sleep rape cases are punished too harshly, they are in the same category as 

"to group the alleged sleep rape cases, that often are related with partying and alcohol with young people involved, in the same group with violent rape cases. created consequences that do not match the incident." Said Rune Bår Hansen to NRK.

Hansen had the opinion that there is a thin line between youths messing about and something that requires jail time or a fine. 

§ 291. Voldtekt

Med fengsel inntil 10 år straffes den som

a)	skaffer seg seksuell omgang ved vold eller truende atferd,

b)	har seksuell omgang med noen som er bevisstløs eller av andre grunner ute av stand til å motsette seg handlingen, eller

c)	ved vold eller truende atferd får noen til å ha seksuell omgang med en annen, eller til å utføre handlinger som svarer til seksuell omgang med seg selv.

§ 292. Minstestraff for voldtekt til samleie mv.

Straffen er fengsel fra 3 inntil 15 år dersom voldtekten som nevnt i § 291 omfattet:

a)	innføring av penis i skjede- eller endetarmsåpning,

b)	innføring av penis i fornærmedes munn,

c)	innføring av gjenstand i skjede- eller endetarmsåpning, eller

d)	dersom lovbryteren har fremkalt en tilstand som nevnt i § 291 bokstav b for å oppnå seksuell omgang.

§ 293. Grov voldtekt

Grov voldtekt straffes med fengsel inntil 21 år. Det samme gjelder dersom den skyldige tidligere er straffet for handlinger som nevnt i §§ 291, 294 eller 299.

Ved avgjørelsen av om voldtekten er grov skal det særlig legges vekt på om

a)	den er begått av flere i fellesskap,

b)	den er begått på en særlig smertefull eller særlig krenkende måte, eller

c)	den fornærmede som følge av handlingen dør eller får betydelig skade på kropp eller helse. Seksuelt overførbar sykdom regnes alltid som betydelig skade på kropp eller helse etter denne paragrafen.

§ 294. Grovt uaktsom voldtekt

Grovt uaktsom voldtekt straffes med fengsel inntil 6 år. Foreligger omstendigheter som nevnt i § 293, er straffen fengsel inntil 10 år.

§ 295. Misbruk av overmaktsforhold og lignende

Med fengsel inntil 6 år straffes den som skaffer seg eller en annen seksuell omgang, eller får noen til å utføre handlinger som svarer til seksuell omgang med seg selv ved

a)	misbruk av stilling, avhengighetsforhold eller tillitsforhold, eller

b)	å utnytte noens psykiske lidelse eller psykiske utviklingshemming dersom forholdet ikke rammes av § 291, eller

c)	å utnytte en person under 18 år i en særlig sårbar livssituasjon.

På samme måte straffes den som ved forhold som nevnt i første ledd bokstav a til c får noen til å ha seksuell omgang med hverandre.

§ 296. Seksuell omgang med innsatte mv. i institusjon

Med fengsel inntil 6 år straffes den som

a)	har seksuell omgang med noen som er innsatt eller plassert i anstalt eller institusjon under kriminalomsorgen eller politiet eller i institusjon under barnevernet, og som der står under vedkommendes myndighet eller oppsikt,

b)	får noen som han står i et forhold til som nevnt i bokstav a til å utføre handlinger som svarer til seksuell omgang med seg selv eller til å ha seksuell omgang med hverandre, eller

c)	skaffer en annen seksuell omgang med noen som han står i et forhold til som nevnt i bokstav a.

§ 297. Seksuell handling uten samtykke

Med bot eller fengsel inntil 1 år straffes den som foretar seksuell handling med noen som ikke har samtykket i det.

final design

The final outcome is limited by the plastic sleeve as they created more problems than you would initially think because the sleeves started peeling off with any contact with other plastic materials, so when they were gathered together in the print room over half of them had already been destroyed. There were some salvageable so it could have been worse. 

The opacity of the screen print was something that was a problem, but it sorts of works because it is not so see-through as you would have thought. The only other option was to print it on acetate paper but printing it on that would mean that the folding might ruin the entire design. So, the final decision was to have it not be perfect, something that relates to the way that people see Norway. Everyone thinks that it is one of the best places to live, but in reality, it is judgemental and not a place that allows success. With the end result of the design it looks like it tries to be perfect but just never is, it is a bit worn out and tired. That fits within the genre as nothing within the Norwegian rap genre is supposed to be portrayed as perfect. 

The alignment with the front cover became a problem, there were some that were better aligned but they were ruined while drying. so there was no way of using them. 

The design could be improved by having a sleeve without scratches and one that did not have to be glued together with another. The design in itself should probably have been perfectly aligned as the text is not completely straight on the sleeve. The inner sleeve works quite well as the appearance was easier to work with. The design itself could do with some more variation as there could have been a different print on the second layer instead of the blue layer. The idea to have the outer sleeve with just a white box with the text would have been something that could have been interesting. As to not completely hide the design as the opacity did not within favor of the design. The idea that there could be more experimentation within layout has also some to me, and the idea of doing something in more of a 3D style. In order not to have the design as a flat.

in order to make the screenprint a bit easier the design could have been inverted, to that there would be less surface that could be damaged during the drying prosess. The design could easielyer to align as it would not tbe a whole side. 

Norwegian rape culture stats and campaign

According to VG, one out of ten women reports that they have been raped in Norway, and it is increasing by the year. 80% of the reports are ignored or settled. Over half of the victims are under 18 years of age.

In July in 2017, a girl was raped at a festival. according to police, she was held down in the middle of the crowd and raped by a man right in front of the band playing. during the festival, eleven more reports came into the police, they are all shelved today.

during the summer and spring month the number of reports about rape increases.  But there are an even amount of reports per year according to Amnesty International and the UN. The polices numbers states that there are about 100 rape reports filed every month in Norway. But the police assumes that only one out of ten cases get reported.

After a famous rape case, three men were not charged with rape charges, after they had been sexually active with an unconscious and intoxicated woman. This case caused a lot of heat but the response it got from the authorities was that it was the woman's fault for not dressing appropriately. There was no focus on how to get men 

one of five women in Norway will experience violence by a parter(NKVTS). Globally one of three women will experience violence and sexual assault. (WHO)

Watching the campaign video from care called #deardaddy or #kjærepappa you get a personal view on sexual assault, domestic abuse, and rape. 
The storyteller explains why she feels guilt from being raped but at the same time showcases the toxic environment that creates such situations. That quick jokes can make misjudges for a person and have a ripple effect on someone you love.

"No wonder I’m raped when I’m 21. 21 and on my way home in a taxi driven by the son of a guy you went swimming with every Wednesday. The guy that always told insulting jokes, but they were of course only jokes, so you laughed."

"I am not the victim type. I am raised as a strong and independent woman... but one day a boy raised on sexist jokes will take it too far." 

"One day he hits be, but we are still the worlds greatest couple, and I am so confused because I love him and hate him, and I’m not really sure if I did something wrong."

Book cover development

the initial idea was to have the suicide king take his hand of his hart as to insinuate that he is not trustworthy. Typography is placed where the letters on that cards are placed. 

the typeface used is Didot, as it is a modern serif typeface, this is to represent the official but modern take on politics. The inspiration for the typeface is taken from the joker card in the deck the illustration the card is taken away. The king of hearts is known for being selfish and desiring power. The hand of the heart is to showcase the way that Jones represents the establishment as liars and inconsistent. 

 In order to have the front and back cover to be related, I turned the back cover into an ace. The ace of hearts represents love and passion, the king is reaching for the ace as it represents passion and love, as the establishments want the public to trust and love the establishment, but it can never reach it. The line with the "how they get away with it" is mirrored at the bottom this does not work as it is not legible at all so this has to change. The idea of this was to keep the symmetry in the design like a normal card would be.  

The previous design looked a bit flat with the back being illustrated and the front being a card, so with this design, there is a card on both sides. 

The cards do not look alike as the ace has a slight shadow on the left, this left the design a bit lopsided, so in order to make the card look more real, I have created a shadow to the left on the king also.
