Plastering up type and image

The way this is intended to express the theme is by creating quite uncomfortable image. It derives its impact through its contrasting elements in the form of the Morse code and the splatter. The visual language used is based on the idea of that order meets chaos. The poster aims to convey the unstable life many have after such a traumatic event such as the theme suggests, by using unsettling images in the terms of them not being quite what it is or what it is meant to be.

The purpose of this poster is to create intrigue and discomfort and inform people if they are interested in understanding it. This poster is mainly based on the Russe celebration because there are quite a lot of reports that stem from that time of the year.

In the silent critique most, people said that the design was quite ambiguous as they might not make that much sense because of the handling of the subject. The feedback on this one was that it was quite dark and a bit difficult to understand but they mostly got the uneasy feeling that the design is aiming to achieve. Some people said that it reminded them of a struggle which is a close association to the theme, they understood the idea of it without being certain of what exactly the theme is. The design is quite abstract as a whole and it achieves that it is meant to, and if you are interested in learning more you can use the QR code and be more informed.

The plastered up image is still as legible as intended
The texture of the image works well in that scale
the creases creates an intresting feel over the poster

The feedback also said that the poster could evoke sympathy or nether as it is that ambiguous and a bit difficult to understand. The reason for the ambiguity is that this is a difficult topic to handle and in order to have an impact yet not be explicit or offensive there is needed some level of ambiguity.
the image and pattern are all full bleed to have a bigger impact. The design is based on being centered but with the element of hand-drawn image, it is slightly off balance. The slight uneven nature of the image makes a bigger contrast to the straight and purely geometric pattern of the Morse code.

Silent critiques

There was some confusion with the theme especially with the image only and type only the
type only has been pushed forward but the image only is not meant to be all that obvius of a poster so it is not going to happen

plastering it up type and image

when plastering it up it became slightly less flat. The bitmapping made the lines of the type have more of a say in that it created texture in another wise. the kerning works so the type becomes illegible and reqires a bit of consentration in order to read it with the tight leading.

Designer research

This poster was made by Mattia Marchese when she interned at Notter + Vigne. The rhythmic pattern of the leading of the type recreates the installments at the museum. The fading of the silence into the circle showcases the idea of the exhibition. The use of type only and the anonymous typeface Helvetica gives the poster a sophisticated style and the fading into the circle is a contemporary take on the modernist typeface.

the dark style of this poster is something that I want to try to emulate.
the tiles is quite interesting.
this one is way cleaner and is quite effective.
César Lecoq installed this on March 14, 2018. This pasted up a poster by César Lecoq play with the idea of minimalist design having an impact on people passing by. The use of hierarchy within the design makes the eye move from left to right quite quickly but in the end, the full square is the focal point in that it stands out.

The slightly illegible type is something that will be kept in mind.

type and image development

the initial idea was to have it black on white and this way around. but as people started plastering up their posters the ones that were mainly dark created more of an impact because the white in the design draw your eye in more. this also looks way too much like an information sign
The in order to draw people into the design and also express the seriousness of the topic the idea of having the ground in white did not work. In order to showcase the seriousness of the topic, the background was made black as to showcase the dark nature of the problem and also give the design the clear focal point. The centered focal point is placed there as to showcase how the Norwegian judicial system wants to be portrayed, but the dark background showcases the dark side of the government and how much passes by in the judicial system.

most thin order to add texture, I attempted to add a hvitveis into the distress signal as to show more innocence in the design.

after the crit I tried to incorporate some quotes into the distress signal design. so taking this part of the story of what happened after this woman was raped on a date and making it slightly illegible with the tracking and leading. the overlapping text makes the otherwise eligible type become illegible as they merge together and it is not the most pleasant poster to look at because of the type the Black destress signal becomes the focal point as it is is so dark and centered you read the everything and your eyes move naturally down the poster because you are most likely to give up on reading it because of the uncomfortable design, the same way that this is an uncomfortable topic.

When bitmapping the type in order to get the stripes of the bitmap and add some texture as to not have it as flat it also made the text more even and more legible because of the overlapping of the slightly opaque type became one layer to the eye.

The poster aims to confuse the reader by adjusting the kerning and leading in that all of the words loses its meaning when the glyphs lose its legibility. this poster uses the law of pragnanz as the viewer’s mind has to interpret the words underneath the image and the words in itself because of the kerning and leading, within the poster to simplify the message in the poster.  The use of the overlapping type aims to visually communicate the idea that it can be difficult to talk to anyone about it. It does so through its similarity with how you speak when you have too much on your mind. The image of the distress signal against the ground of the text places the design in a reversible figure ground relationship, in that you can see the text and only see that you can also almost erase the ground and only see the signal.
The typefaces anatomy is rounded finals with straight angles at the end of the terminals. The even weight of the sans-serif type creates organized chaos with the adjustments made with leading and kerning. The typeface references the anonymity of Helvetica but with straighter lines and a harsher line because the type follows the same rule throughout the entire typeface. This typeface has more of an attitude, but it is slightly muted. The line length is slightly short that makes it harder to read as when you get in the swing of interpreting the type there is a new line with more clustered type.

The use of the translated quotes from the victim is intended to hint at the theme but you might see it depending on what your experience because it is quite vague. The idea of treading a bit around the theme is made so that victims do not feel like they are being forced to relive their experience. The text is placed in the background to reference how the politicians made the law so that a testament of the event is not enough to prosecute the rapist so to showcase the shadowing of the type with the distress signal is in reference to the judge having to have proof of other physical violence or threats in order to have the rapist convicted.

Plastering it up image

The poster came out so that I had to trim every tile which took some time, and then pasted it down with watereddown pvc glue.
It turned out quite well it is not perfectly applied so there is some excess paper on the top but that has to do with the uneven start of the plastering. It turned out alright, ideally all of the lines would be perfectly aligned but that is part of the charm of the proses in that it is imperfect and Lomé made. The design once printed challenges the eye with its ambitious figure ground look.

Crit initial ideas

Make a more obvious type and image or a obvious type only

development

The image on its own is quite dramatic and the arch becomes the immediate focal point as it is the darkest element on the page, your eye moves across until it is interrupted by the white splatter. When your eye moves to the left with the stroke of the paint.

In order to see what another effect the negative side of the image it was inverted, but with that tone of voice that that image created it ended up looking more like a murder scene instead of it showcasing the theme.

This poster works with a full bleed second layer with the Morse code. The focal point in the design becomes the Morse code on the bottom of the page because of how big the contrast there is between the ground and the digital drawing. The Morse code became quite distracting as your eye moves past the image and right to the bottom of the page. but it does not look quite right, when I spoke to my peers they said that it looks like the text found under images in the newspaper.

The pattern made with the Morse code creates a rhythm and is a slight reference to how laws are laid out in the law look. The ground is thresholded so the law of pragnanz is in play because of the rhythmic pattern your eye completes the pattern where the black parts of the paint layer overlap. With the rhythmic pattern of the Morse code, the black parts become the focal point, because of the depth it creates. it is almost too rhythmic it is a bit hypnotizing

The idea that the image could be faded so to make it less graphic only achieves to wash away the paint and you lose the impact it has on you. The idea of the poster is to have it a bit uncomfortable and this iteration washes away the uncomfortable image and that leaves the small centered Morse code line that

The initial idea was to have this as the type and image one but as time progressed it became completely illegible even if you were to know Morse code. The poster delivers its visual impact through its organized chaos. The homage of the Morse code contrasts with the unruly nature of the splatter design. places the image in a reversible figure ground relationship in that it is uncertain whether the Morse code is in the background or the splatter.  The image is centrally placed which should have created a obvious focal point but with the Morse code there is no real focal point as to showcase the consistent avoidance on the subject from the politicians despite there being vocal protests from the Russ and Amnesty International all year long. The image is inspired by the drawings that the Russ draw on each other’s trousers in the time period from April to the 17th of May. The poster aims to create a sense of unease by avoiding having a set focal point and having your eye wander. The use of the spacing of the Morse code aims to visually communicate tthe idea of sistress in that the image does not let itself have the time to finish speaking before the next sentence has begun. The code is made smaller as to rather than looking like Morse code it looks like an unproporionate pattern that does not align anywere. In the group crit Ben said that in order to express the idea there should be a QR code so that if epole are interested they can checkout the website. The code is placed in the bottom right corner at the end of the black splatter the code has a simmelar pattern to the rest of the design so it merges into it. THe code just gives you a bit more context if you are intrested.

ideas

The idea aims to showcase how many are subjected to rape in Norway. this idea would be needed in order for it not to be interpreted as something else, also the black parts should probably only take up 10% of the poster.

This idea is based on how one thing can take over your life, this is showcased by having the R dominant and forcing you to look away from the flower and the nice things in life.

Initial ideas x15

Tfor this project, it was necessary to be sensitive with the topic so in order to not be offensive to the victim but rather spark interest.

The idea is based on a quote from a victim she said that after it happened she felt like she was not allowed to feel beautiful or looked at because she felt dirty. The use of removing the beautiful part of the flower show that, and using the black pen it moves the eye from the other flower to the crossed out one.

This image is based on the violent end that the rape case has to have in order to have the rapist prosecuted in Norway. the thresholded picture creates more depth in the image as the paper ends up looking like bruises. This image is made so that you have to think about what it could be and it might be something different to you.

These are based on destroying something as beautiful as a flower. the upper ones show the distance a lot of victims puts between themselves and the world. the bottom one is based on pretending it to be ok, because of many of the cases are based on the rapist being someone you know and therefore you don't want people that know both of you to know.

The upper one is based on making the characters look slightly like boxy silhouettes. the use of minimal white space gives more intrigue to the text as you don't really see what it says.                                                                                                  The second one is made to look like prison bars using rearranges stripes of text. The imperfect bars showcase the instability that victims feel afterward also references where the perpetrators should end up.

This idea is based on a quite unknown distress signal, the signs or items can be arranged in almost any way, to showcase distress. The overarching idea of this is based on a silent cry for help, as this design is based on the unknown distress signal as many do not know when something as horrible has happened with someone close to them. the

the word has lost all meaning in this design, this is in reference to the law losing all meaning in that there has to be serious harm or threats in order to convict the rapist. this idea is based on hiding the letters in the ripped up pieces of paper. this idea uses figure-ground as you don't have to see the letters you could see some other letters or figures. you could see hope or rape.

this idea is based on what you need in order to have a legible typeface. The torn type refers back to an interview with a 19 year old girl and what she said about how it affected her, she said it broke her down and seeing the perpetrator everyday tore her down more day by day.

The idea is based on the statistic on where more rape occurs which is at parties and the victims are usually 17-26-year-old girls. taking the lights often found at paries and making a collage of it

removing important parts of the letters symbolizing something being taken away from you and nothing making sense anymore

referring back to the distress methods here i have used morse code this spells out rape, the idea is that you have to experience it in order to understand how it can affect you afterward. The use of Morse code would talk to a very small amount of people as this theme is not something that you would want to be screamed out on the streets in that bog of a format.

first one is based on noise and the noise one of the victims had in her head afterwards screaming to let it. out and make them pay, but not wanting to risk it happening again she stayed quiet.       The second is based on having something that is used up with no value anymore, like the photocopy cards.                                         This one is a touch-based one where you have morse code yet again but you can feel it so it is more of an interactive thing, this would be evolved into having more text on it like facts.

10% of the Norwegian population has said that they have experienced rape so using that I have made an idea that would make a bruise that would take up 10% of the design. to make something that could look like a bruise and have that take up 10% of the poster.           The seccond one is based on just having a Big bruise as the design but with text underneeth it so you would not really be able to read it because you cant see the whole story. the text would be covered by the bruse as that seems to be the most important thing for teh Norwegian judisial system insetad of the word of the victim.

this is the first idea but as it was it looks like a frowning face. it is meant to be uncomfortable and nor right with the whimsey of the splatter the dark lines and white splatter reppresent the aftermath of a rape.
