screen prints

after reading my screens and having them ready to expose someone managed to splatter water about in the coating room and it hit my screen so it now has lots of dots on it. nothing is working as it should.

I have worked with the screen printing today and the front page has worked out nicely but printing double sided with screen prints is so horrible as you have to have them align on both sides and on all four layers together. I did attempt to print it on a piece of a1 paper but it was impossible to have it align on both sides so that is not happening. this way the rationale is going to be visible and useful too. that is good I guess.

they were out of the enforced paper in the library and it cant be found elsewhere so I ended up using the paper stock that was delivered to uni. it folds nicely enough

The paper stock chosen was dependent on being foldable yet sturdy as it would be handled quite a lot. Using this stock that is slightly thinner than cartridge as that was difficult to fold nicely. In the critique, Pat said to use thicker newsprint but they were out at the library shop and there was none to find elsewhere. So, this was the best alternative even though enforced newsprint has a map like finish and weight that would have fitted in with the design. The texture of the paper used is more reminiscent of older maps, in that is does not have a gloss to it. The paper has a more interactive element to it in that it has a slight texture to it.

screenprint day one

whilst stripping and reading my first screens they were taken and I could not find them so I had to find new screens that would fit the work on them and strip them. this has been a shit day as it should not happen withthe system of the print room.

flowers

the illustrations were quite straight forward as they are meant to be simple they are not to size as that would make the norwegian ones so small in comparison to the Marguerite as the Bergfrue flower grows out of a succulent.

joiner photography

The idea of joiner photography inspired the idea of patching together an image form very little. The technique of joiner photography consists of taking several images of the same place or thing and having them from different angles and join them together to create an environment. the problem with doing a literal interpretation of this for the back is that it would literally not be possible.

outlines

taking the idea with the acetate paper and recreating in in illustrator taking the colours from the different national flowers. The countries were traced with straight edges as to have a consistent look across all of the countries as there are several different shapes to be found. Overlapping the route so that the walking area creates an unpleasant colour, this has also been inverts to the countries are cut out so that the centre of the journey is to be in the colour of the paper.

returning to the initial development using the new tracings of the countries the colours from the flowers were applied to the design, this lead to the Norwegian outline disappearing as the national flower is Bergfrue. the outlines are way too faded as the norwegian one is white that would not be visible ever.

trcing paper drawing of the coutries, leyering them up did not work becaue of the opacety of the paper.

type layout right side

taking the inspiration form the crit with pat and using sauaages to categorize the countries seems fun so i made some illustrations of the sausages.
As for the right-side, Pat came up with the idea of illustrating the sausages the different countries are known for. The initial designs were cleaner and with a solid fill but that did not keep with the overall ascetics of the map so far. In making the sausages more detailed creates a more humoristic vibe over the right side. They are laid out in their approximate size as to add whimsy of it. Another idea from the critique was to come with clothing recommendation along with the trip so for each county there is some suggested outerwear with a slightly unhelpful sentence as to what or why. these items are based on the approximate weather in each country during March approximately so they might be a complete miss. The type is set around the illustrated clothing as to make even more of a pain to read. The grid helps to have an order in this design the design is made around the grid of the folds, so it is an 8x8 grid. This way the design of the back was easier to achieve.

ben also wanted be to make paches that you caould put on jackets

The final back designs packed full of information, there was an idea to add a fact about each country but in order to have some open space in the otherwise packed design that was not taken forward.

There is also a short rationale you can read when the map is folded down and an explanation of the hotels and restaurants so there is minimal confusion as to what it is while still keeping some of the mystery of it.

The first attempt took inspiration form constructivism typography as all of the type was interlocked. The restaurants are green whilst the hotels are black so you can distinguish them. after some feedback they said that it was very late two thousand which is quite accurate.

The initial idea for it was to split it up into the different countries and have them portrayed almost like cityscapes along the edge of the paper, but the rag was so extreme that it hurts to view. The different countries have such varying amount of stops so it is a bit awkward.

To make the right side a bit more inventive Pat said to introduce roadside food and snacks that you would find in the different countries. Illustrating well-known sausages from the different countries they are to be incorporated into the typographic layout. as to sort the ragging problem all of the names of the stops got altered the kerning so that it would be justified, just a bit extreme. The route does not have to be all that legible as none in their right mind would set out on this journey. This created a playful take on the otherwise quite neutral typeface. The spacing creates a clear divide between the countries so that people can interpret sausages to the countries if they know a bit of how the languages are set up.

the drastic kerning is really fun and it does not take itself all that serious.

when I showed this design to Ben he thought that it was too busy so i removed the facts and focused more on making the layout right with waht was already there.

at frist, I was not sure which side the rationale should be at but after taking a look at it this did not seem right and my peers also agreed. The lighter layout works alot better as it allowes you to caually take in the diffrent parts of it.

as the final version of the side, the rationale has slight increased kerning and the information about the page has large kerning as to show that the text has two different types of purpose

left brain layout day one

As all of the typefaces was inconvenient for the large body of text planned out. The typeface used in Gotham in different weights. The Gotham typeface is a geometric typeface reminiscent of Futura but it has more of a dominant personality as it does not follow the rules set to a like Futura does, this you can see in the weights in the arc of the j and the arches of the n’s, m’s in that they slightly tapers into the stem. The two different tiers of the lowercase a and g. as the a is a double tier whilst the g is a single tier. this typeface is also similar to the typeface used on road signs through Europe.
using the routes from earlier and as to illustrate the different routes

The first part of the informational side of the poster was to find the different routes to showcase all the different way you could get to Sandefjord. This is presented in a clinical way as the back is divided into a left side and right side. where the left is more informative and straight forward against the more alternative right side. The use of the bold type to showcase the actual route is to that people get a bit distracted by that and they can get a shocking revelation with the number of hours the different trips to take in comparison to others.

A part of travel is to learn a bit about the culture there and a large part of that is to learn some of the language spoken there. to on the left side, there are some possibly useful phrases you could say in order to find your way. AS to showcase the languages the name of it in the language was placed vertically as to allow a bit more space on the page for the actual phrases which needed distinct lines so that it would not be any confusion as to what entailed in the line. The text has no altercation to the kerning as the side it is on is to be simple and straight forward.

LongLunch

LongLunch by Johnatan Barnbrook  LongLunch is a non-profit organisation providing the design community with inspiration through an insight into the world of other creatives.  the use of the two colours is quite effective and the use of type layout creates a busy layout as it playes on the wit of his designs. . Barnbrook works with big problems such as consumerism, politics and corporate culture. Because he works in both the commercial and non-commercial spheres, he often combines wit, political savvy and irony into his designs.

route

the different routes that can be taken from the walk to public transport and biking. there are a lot of different ways that you can travel which does not involve flying,

fining the national flower a population per km and more to apply to the design as to what can be applied. The route is thoroughly planned which took ages. never doing this again. from the first round of planning I had to go over it because some of the places were actually not quite what I expected.

crit with Pat

In this critique, it was suggested to have an informational side of the poster that would use the journey planned and other facts that would be useful, as a sort of key for the viewer. they also said that it should be bigger than A3. So that will be implemented.

exchange rate

exchange rate

the graph is not all that accurate but it illustrates the exchange rate so it will hve to do. this element is a bit use less as the rate changes several times a day soo.

folding

The idea to add some fact in with the designas to add some sense of humour in to the design such as the fact that such as :

- On average, 488 people are injured by zips and 3,078 people are injured by slippers every year in the UK.
- The sea is maximum 50 km (31 miles) away from any given point in Denmark.
- Dutch national football team is widely regarded as the largest team to never win the World Cup. The team has a record to play most World Cup finals without winning the trophy and finishing second in the tournaments in 1974, 1978 and 2010.
- More cyclists than motorists died in traffic accidents in the Netherlands in 2017. A total of 206 cyclists and 201 motorists were killed in accidents last year.
- Donaudampfschifffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerkbauunterbeamtengesellschaft is the longest word to be published. It is 79 letters long. The main idea was to find long words with possible and absurd meaning.
also finding the sausages that the countries is known for
