research

this website functions as a partly animated website as some elements move and it looks like a bit of a mess. The chaotic nature of it is balanced by when you click on something you get a calmer cleaner design. Some of the elements are still moving but they are contained. the chaotic visual language is intriguing so you want to find out what is there.

this website is awoken by the user clicking and that makes the animated tiger? claw punch the type. the type still links to the additional pages but he whimsy of it and that it is not set is intriguing.

this design is based on a digital version of a newspaper using the traditional layout of a newspaper The historical design but reinterpreted and altered to a modern audience. The links fade out a bit when you hover so you know that there is something there. the image to text ratio is interesting as you get a sneak peek into the visual image.

The concept of the impossible quiz is that it takes so many attempts in order to find the end goal if you ever do, and when you do you only get a pat on the back. The frustration of this is something that i would like to look into.

this website layers images when you hover over the titles the photos pop up and the titles of the photo missions are faded and you can't see them, the initial experience is confusion.

The overlays of this website are creating a movement that would not be necessary and it works to communicate the digital poem collection. The large serif typeface is a bit weird to me, as it is not big enough so that it is fun and playful and the type layout is not interesting to make up for the type choises in my opinion. The colour chose, on the other hand, is very interesting as it references the digital design, as that shade id to be found in code, and links.

these are two of the websites about Folehavna. both of them talk about exactly the same it is close to word for word for the sign at Folehavna. The only difference is one is designed more astetecly but the information is hidden to the right column

type changes

when I was told to change the type on the old side of the book I considered changing the typeface on the writing. the initial typeface is the one that goes through the new side of the book. I attempted the typewriter but it got to be a bit much as the book is at the start and the idea of having the images lead you into the history works better conceptually according to some peer feedback. The hyphenated type still works as to make it have worse readability, as to reference the difficulty to find information and the ban of the place for several decades.

I also attempted to find an alternative typeface to have a common thread through the book. but three typefaces in the book is a bit much.
as to add page numbers as suggested by my crit group I initially had them in the same typeface as the text at the start, but with the quality of the images and the obvious date of them it clashed a bit with it.
But with the tracing paper elements being in this typewriter typeface it had added a bit depth to the design. the initial attempts were made with the numbers. if I were to fo with the numbers I think id have to add the zero in front of every single digit date. as to make it more of an even kerning through the text.
But after attempting to make it with the Norwegian months written out it showcases the origin throughout and it is more natural to write the dates with the texta and, not the number in Norwegian.

chinagraph

as per my critique, they suggested that I use a chinagraph for the outlines so I printed out the outlines double the size and traced them. I have then proceeded to scan them in and edit them to remove the background and create a more even line.

final crit

use typewriter typeface or actual typewriter.
make a belly bind.
texture line use chinagraph pen for the outlines.
fix justification.
send the text to farfar for him to write.
coordinates as page numbers on new bit and dates on the old bit.
use some colour on the new side.

designs

the layout of the title side is to resemble actual maps with the type following the baseline of the grid. the type is not needed to make much out of itself so s simple sans serif typeface as it is neutral and would not lean too much to the history or the current side of the book.

it seems unbalanced with both are on the one side. so it might need to be moved to go across the whole spread.
as the layout has canged the type has moved upwards as to follow the grid of the images.

the leading of the text is to showcase the whe washed and såread out nature of the worn bits at the end of Folehavna.
the map of the route I took whilst exploring the pace created using illustartor but it is a bit too clean as it does not represent the place right.

innhold

as for the informational pages, it could be centered but centered text is difficult to read and is also messy to look at.
it makes more sense that it be left-aligned or right-aligned. this way the text create a rough rag towards the spine.

the text on the new side should probably be redacted as to showcase the censorship of the place as there was no info about the place from 1945-1995. and also how difficult it has been to find information about folehavna.

større of større
this idea is derived from te idea of hiding the past with the first images from the archive being tiny and those pages having larger amounts of text and that transitioning to large images without any type on them.

image
this idea ia based on showcasing on one specific ting per page and having the right side showcase it closer and more in-depth.

difficult to read
this is based on having. it divided into two sides one with historical text on it and the other showcasing the beauty of today. the type has large leading and wide letter spacing with hyphenation as to make it difficult to read and make the reader forget and ignore the text and focus om the images instead.

the images should probably be bigger as to really showcase them.

full redaction
this is based on creating some pattern using the text and basing it on the typesetting with it being left-aligned and right-aligned. The lines create a

grid
This layout is based on a strict Scandinavian design inspired by traditional photographic books as the images are of an alright standard. The images flow from one page to the other in an unapologetic matter. the type is sett to left-aligned and right-aligned and in the modern vertion they are redacted as to hide the content and in the archive part, you can read it all. There was an attempt to have it centered but with the cover being ripped and you can see it when you open the book me peers said that it would be more visually pleasing to have one side be along the lines of the strict grid-based images.
