forgotten languages

Being concerned with environmental extinction is important but there is another rapid extinction rate that is going largely unnoticed by many. political leaders bother less with this than environmental changes which is insane. there is about 5 000 living languages in the world today. each of them can be a precious treasure as language is not just a form of communication, it tells a story in itself and has experience with it. It reflects ways of perceiving and organizing social life, ways of living. Every language has its own purpose and effect on society.

Language death involves rectifying the thought and wing-cutting of our creative power. Still, it is happening rapidly with disturbing indifference. Now it is nothing new that languages die out and are forgotten. In human history, many languages have disappeared without leaving any trace. Many of them we never know about.

How many languages - and where?
Language death has already led to major linguistic alignment in the world. The five languagesmost people use - Mandarin Chinese, English, Hindi, Spanish and Russian - are native languages to 45% of us. As many as 95% of the earth uses only 100 of the 5000 existing languages. None of the 4900 languages used by the remaining 5% of today's people can be said to have a secure future. Many of them are disappearing right now; many more are at risk of dying out first. An UNESCO expert group estimates that more than half of the world's languages are directly threatened with death at the moment.

What does language death look like at this moment and in our immediate past? In Europe, several languages have died out in recent times, such as Cornish, Manic, Livonian and Dalmatian, and dozens of current languages are in a vulnerable situation: all the Sami languages, Eastern and Northern Frisian, Irish, Gaelic, Breton, Basque, Ladino, Romani, Yiddish and many others. We must not forget that there are far more languages in Europe than the official national languages. Only in the EU area before the 1995 enlargement is there more than 50 minority languages without official status, and they are the mother tongue of every six EU citizens. In this context, it is worth mentioning, although far less dramatic than the total language death, that a number of languages die out in areas where they have been minority languages for hundreds of years: German in France and Italy, Catalan in France, French in Italy, Turkish in Bulgaria and Greece, Greek in Albania, Bulgaria and Turkey, etc.

Worse, it is on the American continent. There were about 1,000 languages at the end of the 16th century. 300 of them are gone now, and of the remaining 700, approx. 680 in the danger zone; only 17 have more than 100,000 users. In the United States alone, around 50 languages have been eradicated since the arrival of Europeans. Throughout North America, there are still about 150 native languages; with few exceptions, they are all in imminent danger of disappearing over the next generation.

In Africa, too, many languages are at risk of extinction. It is most worrying, however, in the Pacific. About 25% of the world's languages are found there. In Australia alone, 50 of the at least 200 different languages found there when Europeans arrived are extinct, and another 100 are dying at the moment. About 40 Polynesian and 50 Micronesian languages are also seriously believed. The sudden change in culture in the region is not least threatening the approx. 700 languages in Papua New Guinea and the more than 800 languages on the islands of Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Fiji.

Why does language die out?
Why does language die out? In part, language death is related to the death of those who use the language. It can be about direct genocide: In Brazil alone, for example, about 80 different Native American people were exterminated in the Amazon area between 1900 and 1957. This is how things are happening. In the past, it was more common for language communities to die as a result of epidemics, famine and natural disasters.

I showcased whe small bits that I’ve done.
It seemed like they liked the black and white bits and the handwritten animation. I talked about my idea to have an informational bit and a personal bit in a website manner and Orlando did not like the idea and suggested that I make a contribution to an exhibition as my theme is a bit more out here. He suggested writing a client brief for it and getting some stuff done. He also suggested some places to fake this brief from like a place called the Barbican? In London, Withworth in Manchester or Tetley in Leeds or somewhere local. So fake an exhibition and create some lives to fit in that. The target group would be whoever would go to such an exhibition so basically, somewhat weird language, since or arty people. But it could also be a projection thing during the light festival or something public.

They also said to think of if it be super graphics something interactive or something more along with a simple animation.
The main takeaway was to put it all in a context and set rules.

handwritten

Basing it on the tune signs animation I've took two tutorials to learn how to create the handwritten effects, it is such a pain coz he need to mask everything every single letter so I feel like in order to get it done I might not be able to make it if I were to do a full text doing it like that. I'm just not sure if the effect is what I'd want and also my handwriting so bad I don't think I want to subject anyone to it. And I like the effect I could use it to something else but I don't feel like it's right for this.

how is it going to get out there?
visualise the mistakes
work with type to visualise the story and
work with animation
switching and showing the mistakes
language attrition

keep the idea of language attrition
explore how to visualise it.
what to empiase per one
do five versions

find ways to combine and or connect.

animation two sides

Since I've been looking into a more personal angle of it I kind of want to implement that in some Way within the design. I'm not sure if it's doable us it's not just for me. I've tested out this one way of doing it As I am quite interested in coding in animation as I'm quite interested in the mall technical digital part of graphics as well as print which makes it a lot more difficult to figure out what I want to do. But in doing this way of implementing code language and handwritten design would be quite interesting. To create some sort of contrast within the type to showcase the two different languages or more that's in your head when you know more than one language. And showcase how they interact would be quite interesting as according to theories they work as one big thing that's only separated with a thin layer in between innocence and it's quite easy to jump between the two. I could do something with it. I quite like this way of showcasing it or at least that's the concept of it to have it all on one page but maybe get it to interact a bit more but I'm not sure how I'll do that with handwriting and code language.

Taking the idea of having two sides of the Storey and getting inspiration from Amelia and that she said to write a text and one you want to switch over to that language because he can't find a word you switch language and then he switched back. The only issue about this is that it's really quite personal I don't think it's marketable in terms of promotion of anything I don't think it'll actually work in the real world don't think anyone's interested, to be honest. I kinda want to have it a bit broader so that people would possibly understand curse with this sort of writing people would have to know English and Norwegian to get it and I don't think that's sustainable over a longer period.

Taking into consideration the different theories such as trace decay theory I wanted to produce an animation that would showcase stop the mistakes aren't erased a that people don't really forget. I wanted to test this in a couple of different ways. I wanted to test out some fun animation so I found this tutorial on how to recreate handwriting in animation so it looks like it's written. It is such a pain honestly if I do this all take hours upon hours. But this concept is that it be divided into 2 and realistically I'd want the handwritten one to be the native language, as that is the most personal one and having facts about language actuation for the typed-out text. I'm not sure where this would go as is quiet and up in the air sort of thing it's not like it's set in stone that this makes sense that this is this way. Initially, I wanted to make a book but I don't have a printer and I feel weird about producing a digital one. So I need to figure out a way to showcase this which makes sense for the quite common issue. I could possibly do Instagram or social media way about it, I could possibly make a website that would illustrate the issues of it to showcase to people that don't understand it what it's like and how frustrating it is. It could be like you trying to write something and then you always get the wrong word it never works outright. Or the end of the tax that you've written is something completely different. But I feel like a website like that would never be used so it might have to be a public thing war an exhibition colour thing.

I'm not sure if I like the direction of this yet but I think there's something that I could do whether this is within this project or something else I find it difficult to produce ideas when I'm stuck alone and it's also weird to reach out. I've talked a fair few of my graphics mates and they've given some feedback on it but it's difficult to fathom some of it I find it. I feel like I want to work with Skype because that's some of the things that I really like doing but maybe doing in a different way than this and also need to get what I want to do with it. I think if I have a thing that I'm making it full or a purpose of it would be easier to do it.

As Emilia suggested to showcase how I write I decided to screen record my screen when I was writing a text and the idea of animating that might be kind of fun, in a proper way so it's not just word but kind of working with the type and possibly showcasing how it feels works and all that I could do in a better way possible and having like maybe projected on a big wall and having handwritten scratched out and redone and working in a sort of big format possibly to showcase How I feel about it anyway but would do it this way it might be like a dyslexia thing since I've got that as well. I'm just not sure if it works I think it is impactful to have it on a big wall and written out and having it talk about the facts of language actuation and having the text be research-based but also having how that affects me or possibly others.

I've also tested out just writing in Word and seeing how much I get wrong and possibly highlight that and showcase how long it takes me to find the right word or the right grammar. I'm not sure if this is good enough but this technique could also be used for potential website, so you'd cross out the wrong word and then start again but still see the word and continue on do making mistakes showcasing them and moving on.

"development"

focusing a bit on remembering and forgettin not so much the culture side of it. im still not sure what to do.

i found the wikipedia page that showcases all of the forgotten languages this idea is to have a more visually pleasing way to display it and also have it be an extensive overview oft he decades and showcase the languages and some history about it. this website would be aiming to shed a light on how we treat languages and the culture that it belongs to. I like the idea but I would rather base it worlds that have been lost i think. if I'm able to id like to make the world 3d and spinning so you can find where you want to be on the earth.

I should probably add some examples of words for the languages that I can find.

this idea is based on the following 7 instructions and you can set the page to whatever language you want.  the instructions are based on tips that people have given or gotten so that they won't forget their language there are also some tips that are based on remembering. I'm not sure how to go about this.

this is to be a website that is based on informing other people and people that might not be aware of it that it is a thing. the website would be based on hidden elements I need to figure out what to do about them but I like the idea that there is either hidden something in plain sight or not and you need to find one thing to find the next.

two sides that sometimes merge. see if you have two texts one in English and one in another language. they are also written out typewriter-style but sometimes the words for things are switched or explained because you can't find the word for it.

what next?
figure out the layout and do it with references to the research.
I need to spend some more time with this.
talk to more of the international students.

I haven't dealt well with this situation. I haven't been able to produce much as there are much more important things to do, ive been helping my cousins with their children as they work in the health sector so I've been responsible for their homeschooling most days. as I'm one of the few that can as I'm not in a risk group or work in an essential job.  ihavent had all that much time to think but I got an idea when we had Nynorsk(second Norwegian dialect of the language) class.  id sort of like to showcase the forgotten languages as a part of the projects as most people are unaware of the number of languages, Norwegian has many ways that it is pronounced because of the mountains and the nature of the land. in Norway there are two official languages Norsk and Samisk. Norsk has two written ways and Samisk has three. I'm uncertain if I should do a bit about that or focus more about the completely different languages. Ive also got a funeral next week and won't be able to access internet. i don't know what to do about that but.

history of language

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWDKsHm6gTA

i found this ted animation talking about how languages evolve and change over time as people have moved and countries have been created. i found it really quite interesting and it showcased somewhat how languages have became what it it and also what people count as languages.
