after the crit they said to add a belly bind to give structure to the book, this was a great idea, but what layout though. The base of it is that the titles for both sides of the book should be on their respective sides. therefor are all of the layouts based around that.
the first one is replicating the map inspired layout form the inside. the problem with this is that there is a lot of negative space and the type seems cramped when it is all on the one side instead of spreading out on the inside.
this attempt was made having the type justified on the two lines, the issue with this one is that Forsømt Fortid does not have an equal amount of glyphs so that side off-balanced and it is just slightly wrong.
similar to the other one this one has a normal leading the cramped feel to it, and it has the same issue that the first one with odd negative space, but in addition to that it also has the weird alignment.
the layout of this one is based o the type layout on the inside to have the type align to each of the sides, but when I printed it out it was difficult to align it to the spines of the book and make it fit perfectly.
layout edits
as to create a balanced look to the belly bind I toggled the kerning of the fortid to kame they interlock with each other and create a zig-zag pattern. my peers said that the width of it seemed a bit off as it was not full-bleed or properly contained in the confinements.
as to attempt the full bleed idea but the result ended up with the band not aligning properly and the text started to run across the bind.
final one
after some more feedback, I decided to go for this layout because it allowed the text to have more room to breath
colour paper
the coloured paper is a bit difficult as the printer does not want to take the dark blue card. The pop of clour is severely needed for the band as the cover is essentially beige. The dark blue suits it the best as the contrast and refrences the content. the feedback also said to go with the blue colour because it links to the sad history and nature at the same time.
colour print
As to mock up the possible screen prints I also mocked it up with printing colour on white paper. this showcased the effect but the creasing ruined it so it cant be used in the final one.
final
The combination of the white and blue brightens up the blue belly bind whilst adding a colour break from the shades of grey and white in the book and it gives a sneak peek into the book.
with more time I´d screenprint the belly bind, I think with some texture and hiding the title within a texture from Folehavna. like the mounts
