In case I've forgotten to write anything up.
generally the book
Stock
the paper chosen is a recycled acid-free cartridge paper with 100gsm the reason for this is that the paper had to have some texture to it so after tons of tests I found this paper at Cass art. the fact that it is recycled adds to the idea of Folehavna and the fact that is has gone through several changes throughout its history.
Cover
The cover is made out of BFK Rives Gray Tint 280gsm, the colour is based on the nature found at Folehavna, it consists of water, grass, and stone, therefore, the colour of the paper is this green and blue-tinted gray colour.
Embossing
As to hint at the idea that the Norwegian nazi history is something that people want to forget and usually is angled as is everyone was against the Nazi regime as we had one of the longest resistance periods of about 3 months. The embossing is appropriate because it is there and you can see it but it is not bold and out there to bring too much attention to it.
Bind
The binding is a dos-a-dos this is because the book aims to showcase the two different sides of Folehavna, the history, and the beautiful hiking trail.
The binding method
In order to avoid having the book having a large creep so that the book would remain a similar size. of pages. and also the images go across the spreads it needs to be able to lay flat. that is the reason for the Coptic stitch binding as it achieves that.
Tracing paper
The idea of the tracing paper was to introduce information on both sides of the book relevant to either showcasing the history and impact of the Nazi regime or showcasing specific parts of the images. The reason for tracing paper is that it is see-through but you have to work for it. It is not readily available and edition the designs cover up the images as to make the book seem less of a photo book or advertisement for Folehavna.
Belly bind
the belly bind is a dark blue base with a white band with the titles for each side of the book on the appropriate side.
Introduction
Type
The typeface used for the introduction is Gotham book 9pt with a 10,5pt leading. This typeface is used because it is a modern sans serif typeface and it references the propaganda posters of the Norwegian Nazi party, as they used sans serif whilst tying the book together.
Line length
The line length is slightly short and there I tons of hyphenations this is to make it uncomfortable to read in reference to how difficult it is to find information about Folehavna.
Book size
the book is 12cm by 19.4cm the measurements are based o elements related to Folehavna. The 12cm is based on the 120meter long underground tunnel that apparently is there. there are some images from there but it is closed off like many things at Folehavna. The 19,4 cm high is based on the date of the occupation as the germans took over Folehavna in 1941.
Kerning
The kerning is -10 as to create a slightly confined feel to it, as to reference the political state of Norway at that time. there was only allowed on the political party.
Redaction
The texts of the two different sides have the opposite parts of the text redacted. the history side has the bits about the current state and explanation of the look of it redacted, whilst the beauty(new) side has the entire history redacted. This is to reference the lockdown of Folehavna from 1945 to 1996. as the peninsula was used as a military training camp after the Germans left.
Margins
The book is divided up in the margins of 44mm top, 44mm bottom, 40mm inside, and 40mm outside this was based on having thin columns of text as to make them less legible. The initial numbers were not related to Folehavna so they were altered to fit the timeline of events during ww2.
history side
map
as to showcase how Folehavna is shaped and where items were placed there. I found a map of the military buildings and used it on the overlay to showcase the extent of the transformation. The problem with all of the images of Folehavna from a birds-eye view is that they are all consisting of about 50 pixels so since the map is more about the shape it is bitmapped.
image quality
The images in the history part are not perfect. but the concept of them being pixelated adds to the effect of them being old, there were attempts making them better qualities but it all looked forced and too polished.
type
For the type used it is a typewriter typeface I found online Sears Tower 8pt it as realistic as I could not use an actual typewriter and letterpress does not have a small enough typeface that could resemble a typewriter. The typewriter typeface is used because typewriters were widely used during ww2.
illustrations
The tracing paper illustration of the cannon using outlines of the elements of the cannons used at the fort. The new rights system outline I found online and it was in a nice enough shape to be used as-is, I did consider recreating it using the typewriter typeface but the contrast is quite interesting.
Overlays
The other tracing paper bits consist of type. they are a mix of historical facts and elements of nazi propaganda. the first page is informing on the build-up of the nazi party and the nationalistic mindset in Norway then there is the slogan form the nazi party and ending up in a summary of the effects of ww2.
storyline
The start of the images is showcasing the building of the fort it moves on to it being in use during the war, and then to the images of it being torn down and an image from today but in black and white the text overlays coincides with this as the first ones showcase the county pre and during the war and the middle showcase the nazi propaganda (with a warning of what it is) the end matches up with the breakdown of the fort and the breakdown of the state of Norway after the war.
page numbers
The page numbers reference important dates in Norway in general during the war.
Beauty side
outlines
the outlines on the images showcase part of the beauty that you might look past if you didn't take the time. At the same time, the tracing paper disrupts the images as to hide it, as Folehava has a tendency to be a bit too superficial today, the idea of this side is to showcase some of the obvious beauty but also the hidden details.
images
The images are places in the order of the route that I took whilst doing my primary research. the idea is that they should be repetitive and a bit annoying as all of the images from Folehavna on Instagram is all the same and the simple imagery is only broken up once by the plant image.
map
using the same map as the history side but on this side, it is an abstract version of the route form the primary research. it is drawn out in china marker the same as the outlines, the china marker was used as to have a textured element to it.
page numbers
the page numbers of this side are simply the coordinates from where the images were taken. in the same typeface as the introduction text Gotham book.
