How can I create a typeface that flows?
According to Erik Spiekermann creating a typeface can be like translating sound into type. So how do I create a typeface that represents the word "sudden". The way you say sudden is quite abrupt so I might do something with sharp edges. That would work well with the definition in the dictionary where it means without warning or unexpectedly. In the thesaurus, I found some descriptive words like hasty, abrupt and unforeseen. I think that it could be quite difficult not to be predictable.
I played with a lot of different aspects of the typeface. I went with the Grotesk font “Futura” because it is a font that is quite in your face and unapologetic. It works well with my random word. With the typeface I worked with a lot of different elements, I change the cap height to create a more hasty written type. I warped the crotch to create more dimension to the letters. With the look of my typeface, I had to change the spacing if not it would look as if it was all thrown on top of each other. With the p I had some logistical problems, because I wanted a cohesive look overall, but I was not sure what to do with the loop. I decided that it would be alright to not let them connect because the stem of the letter would go down below the baseline to indicate that it is a “p”. I have played with the stem in some of my attempts to make the font more abrupt and unexpected. With the “h” I wanted to eliminate the softness in the shoulder and make it look someone just could not make straight lines. Within all of my lettering I have played with the vertex as to make it less commercial, and a bit more unexpected.
With the last one of my selected three, I chose to change the x-height as to make it a bit more undefined, and to add a bit more interest.
You can destroy quite a lot before a font loses legibility, I chose to change the way they move and I believe you can still see the letters. I think that I might be able to take it a bit further, but I have chosen to be done with it instead. I worked a bit with having the letters change suddenly so that I created a motion thru the letters that I might not have been able to create without changing a thickness of the stem of the letter and the hight. I worked a bit with the negative space within the lettering, and within them, you can see the intended letter too but none in a obvious way.
I feel like I started off a bit too literal and made the typeface bark a bit too much but I feel like I have managed to create a typeface that show rather than tells. I feel like I managed to create a ok font, not a amazing font, and made mot a usable font in the long run, but it is a interesting font in the way it moves. And I believe I have managed to make it so that it does not bark.
