Studio task week 1 -modular alphabet

I started the proses by tracing some of my previous work, as to find some interesting shapes. I found some that could work, but I already had a favorite typeface, so rather than spending time working my way around the typeface that I already thought could work as an alphabet I tried to find a challenge within the items that I brought with me. I brought with me something that might be useful, and just for fun, I brought in some bells. I started with working with matches and cubes, but they were not that impactful as I hoped. I could not get my spacing quite right either. So I tried with the bells. They are quite difficult to place in my grid so it gave me quite the challenge. I also put my entire alphabet into my sketchbook, so that I would have an overview in case some of the letters would be the same as some other letters. From Pat's observation I altos tried to see how Braille would look like, but the task was to create my own alphabet so I feel like it would be like cheating. But I explored it for a little while. Back to the bells, I chose the bells for the challenge, but I also chose them because I could use them for a sound aspect, “How does an E sound like?”. I want that element in my finished product to create an interactive experience with my typeface.

How does the material affect the product?

The bells strongly affected the typeface, because to begin with it was just perfectly straight lines, now the typeface has more dimension to it. It also added an unexpected dimension to my design, this is how it goes when you continue to play with your design.

I have decided to photograph the bells on a black background and use the photographs as the typeface because the bells loses its effect when it is in vector or on a white background. Therefore it is photographed and presented this way, sort of like The Remington stone font. It is a fun way to look at typography, try something different.

Why not have the bells closer together?

With the amount of space, I have used I have allowed the mind to explore the opportunities that could be there, and in that way, you can find the letters. I tried having them closer but it got too messy to understand, with this font you need some space to understand it. The spacing that I have here is the right amount in my eyes, so that it is close enough so you can see that is could be letters but now close enough so that it is a mess.

Why is the width of the font so small?

My reasoning for the slimness of the font has to do with contrast from the cap hight. I have chosen to make a condensed type, so that I can have more control, over the font.
